Sheikh Misha Khatun, a former student of the University of Dhaka, was killed in a road accident while travelling from Khulna to Dhaka to attend the viva voce examination for the 50th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) recruitment process.
The accident occurred at around 10am on Sunday, 6 September, in the Salinaboksha area of Muksudpur upazila in Gopalganj, along the Dhaka-Khulna highway. A Tungipara Express bus reportedly lost control and plunged into a roadside ditch, killing Misha and two other people.
Misha was a student of the 35th batch of the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the University of Dhaka. After completing her studies, she joined the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) and was working as a chemical examiner at its Khulna office.
Despite having established herself professionally, Misha continued to pursue her ambitions. She had qualified to appear for the viva of the 50th BCS examination and was travelling to the capital for what was expected to be an important stage in her career.
Her journey, however, ended before she could reach Dhaka.
The Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) expressed deep sorrow over her death. In a condolence statement, the union said Misha had been travelling with the aspiration of taking part in the BCS viva and advancing her future prospects. Instead, the journey became her final one.
The statement described Misha as a talented former student and a promising young life whose sudden death represented an irreparable loss. Her academic background in applied chemistry and chemical engineering, followed by her professional work at BSTI, reflected a career built around technical expertise and public-sector service.
The BCS examination is one of Bangladesh’s principal competitive recruitment processes for entry into the civil service. Reaching the viva stage generally marks the final phase of a lengthy selection process, making the journey to Dhaka particularly significant for candidates appearing from outside the capital.
For Misha, the examination represented an opportunity to pursue a new professional milestone while already working in her field. Her death has therefore brought grief not only to her family and colleagues but also to former classmates and members of the wider University of Dhaka community.
The condolence statement was signed by DUCSU General Secretary S M Farhad. It expressed prayers for the forgiveness and eternal peace of Misha Khatun’s soul and sought blessings for her to attain Jannatul Ferdous. The union also conveyed its deepest sympathy to her bereaved family and relatives.
The accident has left a promising professional journey abruptly unfinished. Misha had set out for Dhaka with hopes of appearing before the BCS viva board and taking another step towards her future. She never reached her destination.
