A young man lost his life on Tuesday after being apprehended and assaulted by security personnel and staff while allegedly attempting to break into the Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) office in the Tejgaon Industrial Area of Dhaka. The deceased, estimated to be around 25 years of age, remains unidentified.
The incident unfolded at approximately 7:30 am near the Satrasta intersection in Tejgaon. According to eyewitness accounts and site officials, three individuals scaled the perimeter wall of the state-owned telecommunications hub to commit burglary. On-duty members of the Ansar security force, alongside office staff, intercepted the intruders, capturing one while his two accomplices managed to scale back over the boundary and flee.
Tensions escalated rapidly when the detained suspect allegedly struck an Ansar member in an attempt to break free. Security personnel and employees subsequently restrained the youth, tying his hands before inflicting a severe beating that left him incapacitated.
The victim was transported to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at roughly 3:30 pm, where attending physicians pronounced him dead upon arrival. Inspector Mohammad Habibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the DMCH Police Outpost, confirmed that the body has been transferred to the hospital morgue pending an autopsy and formal identification. Local law enforcement authorities have been notified, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal assault is expected to follow.
Incidents of mob violence and extrajudicial punishment against suspected petty criminals remain a recurring issue across urban centres in Bangladesh. While public infrastructure facilities like the BTCL complex maintain dedicated Ansar detachments to protect state assets, security personnel are bound by strict legal protocols that require detaining suspects and surrendering them directly to law enforcement rather than resorting to physical force. Police are currently working to ascertain the victim’s identity through fingerprint scanning and trace the two individuals who escaped the scene.
