A court in Cumilla’s Brahmanpara upazila has sentenced seven individuals to varying terms of rigorous imprisonment for consuming illicit drugs in public. In addition to prison sentences, each offender was fined 100 taka, with an additional day of simple imprisonment mandated in default of payment. The convictions followed a day-long anti-narcotics operation conducted across several locations in the upazila on Friday, 11 September, by Brahmanpara Police Station.
The operation was led by Sub-Inspector Md Rofiqul Islam alongside Assistant Sub-Inspectors Md Nur Al-Ahsan, Roton Kumar Mollik, and Md Nasir Uddin. Law enforcement personnel caught all seven individuals red-handed whilst consuming drugs during patrols in high-risk zones. Following their detention, the police immediately presented the suspects before the court under summary trial proceedings, leading to their swift conviction.
The convicts hail from various neighbouring districts and upazilas. Among them are Jalal Ahamed, 45, from Chunarughat in Habiganj; Jahidul Islam (also known as Mehedi), 26, and Md Kawsar Molla, 32, both from Debidwar in Cumilla; Md Masud, 42, and Golam Mostofa, 40, both from Brahmanpara upazila; alongside Md Sohel Ahamed, 38, and Md Ismail, 30, both from Kasba in Brahmanbaria.
Evaluating the gravity of the offences, the court handed five-day rigorous imprisonment terms to Jalal Ahamed, Jahidul Islam, Md Kawsar Molla, and Golam Mostofa. The remaining three convicts—Md Masud, Md Sohel Ahamed, and Md Ismail—received three-day rigorous imprisonment sentences.
Officer-in-Charge of Brahmanpara Police Station, Md Faruk Hossain, confirmed that routine anti-drug operations are being aggressively pursued across the upazila. Police authorities reiterated that surveillance and regular patrols will continue unabated to curb drug abuse and maintain law and order throughout the region.
