Germany to Coordinate Humanitarian Aid Airlift for Gaza: Chancellor Merz

Germany has announced its intention to collaborate with Jordan in conducting an airlift of humanitarian aid to Gaza, Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on Monday. The move comes following Israel’s decision to allow secure aid corridors amid intensifying international concern over hunger in the war-ravaged enclave.

Aid Coordination and International Support

Speaking at a press conference in Berlin, Merz said:

“Defence Minister Boris Pistorius will coordinate this initiative very closely with France and the United Kingdom, both of which are also prepared to undertake such an airlift to deliver food and medical supplies.”

He acknowledged the limited scope of the operation but emphasised its symbolic and practical importance:

“We understand that this may only be a small help to the people in Gaza, but it is a contribution we are more than willing to make.”

Merz is due to meet King Abdullah II of Jordan in Berlin on Tuesday to further discuss the mission and regional stability.

Diplomatic Pressure and Calls for Action

Although a long-standing supporter of Israel, Merz urged the Israeli government to:

“Immediately and comprehensively improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza in a sustainable manner.”

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has deteriorated sharply after over 21 months of conflict. Aid organisations have recently raised alarms over the spread of mass starvation, as blockades and ongoing fighting severely limit the flow of essential supplies.

UK Involvement and Peace Efforts

In a related development, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office announced that he had discussed long-term peace plans in the Middle East with former US President Donald Trump during the latter’s visit to Scotland.

According to a spokesperson for Starmer:

“The Prime Minister shared the plans he is working on with European leaders to bring about a lasting peace, building on ongoing collaboration to establish a long-term security solution in the region.”

Starmer is expected to convene a cabinet meeting later this week to review the current crisis and the UK’s role in international peacebuilding.

Diplomatic Missions and Ceasefire Talks

Chancellor Merz also revealed that Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul will travel to the Middle East on Thursday in an effort to advance ceasefire negotiations between Hamas and Israel.

Meanwhile, Israel has begun implementing a daily “tactical pause” in some areas to allow for aid delivery. This decision has led to the successful arrival of truckloads of food in Gaza on Monday. However, humanitarian agencies continue to warn that the volume of aid remains vastly insufficient to address the scale of the crisis.

Germany’s effort is part of an expanding multinational response to the worsening humanitarian crisis, reflecting the urgent need for sustainable solutions and collaborative diplomacy in the region.
