A tragic accident in south-western Bangladesh has claimed the lives of two young girls, leaving a local community in profound grief. Jannati Akhtar, aged eleven, and her eight-year-old cousin, Lamiya Akhtar, drowned on Sunday morning after slipping into the deep water of a local commercial fish enclosure (ghere) in Dariayla village, situated within the Mollahat sub-district of Bagerhat district.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:00 am when the two girls accompanied their grandmother, Nashima Begum, to gather water lilies from a nearby aquaculture pond. According to family members and local ward member Molla Jashim Uddin, the children strayed into deeper section of the water whilst picking the flowers and quickly submerged.

Realising the children had disappeared beneath the surface, family members and neighbouring villagers launched an immediate search effort. After recovering the girls from the water, relatives rushed them first to a local clinic in the Chunkhola area. As their conditions remained critical, they were swiftly transferred to the Mollahat Upazila Health Complex, where the attending medical officer pronounced both children dead on arrival.

Confirming the incident, the Officer-in-Charge of Mollahat Police Station, Md. Shahadat Hossain, stated that both victims succumbed to accidental drowning. He added that the authorities have permitted the grieving family to proceed with funeral arrangements and burial rites.

Drowning remains one of the leading causes of child mortality in rural Bangladesh, particularly in low-lying coastal and wetland districts like Bagerhat. Millions of households rely on artificial fish enclosures (gheres) and natural water bodies for livelihood and daily chores. During the monsoon and post-monsoon months, when water levels rise significantly and aquatic plants like water lilies bloom in abundance, rural children frequently venture near these unguarded water bodies, raising the risk of fatal accidents. Local representatives have repeatedly urged parents to exercise heightened vigilance around open water structures to prevent similar heart-breaking incidents.
