A domestic argument escalated into a fatal tragedy in Cox’s Bazar after a 58-year-old man died from severe knife wounds inflicted by his own son.
The victim, Abul Kashem, locally known as Ledu Mistry, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning, 13 September, while undergoing treatment at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. He had been battling for his life since the brutal assault took place the previous afternoon in his family home.
The incident occurred on Saturday, 12 September, in the village of Hamjarchhara, located within the Hnila Union of Teknaf Upazila. According to local residents and witnesses, an altercation broke out between Abul Kashem and his son, Mohammad Harun, over an ongoing family dispute. As the debate grew increasingly heated, Harun retrieved a sharp knife from inside the house and launched a violent attack on his father. Kashem suffered multiple stab wounds to his chest and abdomen before neighbours could intervene.
Bystanders rushed the critically injured man to the Teknaf Upazila Health Complex. Attending medical staff provided emergency treatment, but as Kashem’s condition rapidly deteriorated, he was transferred to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for advanced care. Despite the efforts of the medical team, he died early the following day.
The acting chairman of Hnila Union Council, Mohammad Ali, confirmed the incident, expressing deep shock over the brutality of the event. He noted that while the family was known to have minor internal disputes, no one in the village anticipated such a fatal outcome. Local representatives have extended their condolences to the grieving relatives.
The accused son, Mohammad Harun, fled the scene immediately following the attack and remains at large. Police have launched a manhunt to trace his whereabouts. Saiful Islam, the Officer-in-Charge of Teknaf Model Police Station, stated that law enforcement officers visited the crime scene to gather evidence and interview witnesses. Multiple police units have been deployed across the upazila to apprehend the fugitive and bring him into custody.
