Johannesburg Encounter Triggers Unprecedented Demand for World Cup Tickets

Cricket’s most intense international rivalry has sparked a global scramble for tickets, with applications for the 2027 Men’s Cricket World Cup clash between India and Pakistan approaching eight and a half million. According to official figures released by the International Cricket Council (ICC), a staggering 8,397,294 ballot entries have been registered for the group-stage fixture scheduled for 10 October at Johannesburg’s historic Wanderers Stadium. Given that the stadium accommodates a crowd of just 34,000 spectators, demand has overwhelmed the available seating capacity by several hundred times, establishing the match as the most sought-after event of the entire tournament.

Interest in the group fixture has remarkably outpaced demand for the World Cup final itself. The tournament finale, set to take place at the same venue on 21 November, has attracted 7,944,944 applications, making it the second most popular fixture in the ballot. Across the entire competition, fans spanning 193 nations have submitted over 120 million ticket requests, with 2.8 million individual supporters registering their interest with the governing body.

The 2027 edition of the tournament is being jointly hosted across three African nations: South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Proceedings will open on 7 October with a high-profile match between Australia and India, serving as a direct rematch of the 2023 final in Ahmedabad where Australia secured the trophy.

Clashing on the world stage, India and Pakistan consistently generate cricket’s highest broadcast ratings and commercial revenues. However, recent head-to-head encounters show a distinct imbalance in performance. India have dominated their arch-rivals in recent years, securing victories in all of their last nine consecutive international meetings across formats. Pakistan’s most recent triumph against India came during the 2022 Asia Cup.

The tournament framework places both nations in Group A alongside Australia, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, and one qualifying side. Group B features England, South Africa, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and a second qualifier. The top three teams from each group, along with the highest-ranked fourth-placed team across both pools, will progress to the Super Seven stage. The top four teams from that phase will subsequently qualify for the semi-finals.

To manage the unprecedented volume of requests, the ICC is operating a randomised ballot system. Entry into the ballot is free of charge, requiring no upfront financial commitment from supporters. Applicants may submit one ticket request per match across multiple fixtures, with all entries received within the designated window standing an equal chance of selection regardless of submission time. In instances where demand exceeds stadium capacity, successful applicants will be chosen through an automated lottery, with all participants notified of their status via their registered email addresses.
