11 BGB Platoons Deployed as Gazipur Labour Unrest Eases

Eleven platoons of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed across the industrial areas of Gazipur to maintain law and order amid protests by workers demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000. However, signs of improvement emerged on Tuesday morning, 3 November, the fifth day of the demonstrations, with no reports of major disruptions or road blockades.

Although isolated incidents were reported at several points along the Dhaka-Tangail Highway, the overall situation appeared relatively calm compared with previous days. No major violence or large-scale disorder had been reported by Tuesday morning, offering some relief to residents, commuters and businesses operating in the industrial belt.

Security measures have been strengthened across key locations. From early Tuesday, BGB personnel and a substantial number of police officers were deployed under the supervision of 25 executive magistrates. The deployment aims to prevent further escalation, maintain public order and ensure that major roads and industrial establishments remain accessible.

Meanwhile, BNP activists were also seen taking positions and conducting patrols along sections of the highway. Their presence was reportedly aimed at resisting agitated workers. The development added another dimension to the situation, as authorities continued monitoring activities across the affected areas.

Mohammad Arif Hossain, Assistant Commissioner of the Media and Research Cell at the Gazipur Deputy Commissioner’s Office, said BGB personnel were conducting patrols in important areas to keep the situation under control.

He confirmed that no incidents of violence had been reported so far. The administration is continuing its efforts to maintain normality and prevent further disturbances in the industrial zones.

Gazipur Industrial Police Superintendent Amjad Hossain also said that no major disorder had occurred. According to him, workers were gradually returning to their workplaces, with employees joining duties at several factories.

The demonstrations have centred on workers’ demand for a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000. The issue has triggered several days of unrest in Gazipur, one of Bangladesh’s major industrial hubs, where a large number of factories, particularly garment manufacturing units, operate.

Labour unrest in the area carries wider economic implications because disruptions to factory operations can affect production schedules, supply chains and the movement of goods. Road blockades can also create difficulties for commuters and transport operators, particularly along major highways connecting industrial areas with the capital and other parts of the country.

For workers, the demand for higher wages reflects concerns over whether their earnings are sufficient to meet everyday living expenses. Wage disputes in the garment sector have long been a sensitive issue, involving questions of workers’ livelihoods, factory operating costs and the sustainability of the country’s export-oriented manufacturing industry.

The deployment of additional security personnel indicates that the authorities are taking precautions against a possible deterioration in the situation. At the same time, the gradual return of workers to factories offers some indication that industrial activities may be stabilising.

Despite the relative calm on Tuesday morning, the underlying wage dispute remains a key concern. Whether the improved situation will continue depends partly on how the workers’ demands are addressed and whether a peaceful resolution can be reached.

For now, the administration and law enforcement agencies remain on alert, with security patrols continuing across important industrial locations in Gazipur.
