Bangladesh Dengue Toll Hits 149 After Six More Deaths

Six more patients have died from dengue fever in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide death toll from the mosquito-borne viral disease to 149 this year.

Data released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Sunday (13 September) revealed that 1,561 new patients were admitted to hospitals across the country during the same period. The steady influx of hospitalisations highlights the persistent threat posed by the disease during the peak vector-borne infection season.

The latest fatalities were recorded across four major administrative divisions. Chittagong and Khulna reported two deaths each, whilst the Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions accounted for one fatality apiece.

With these fresh hospital admissions, the overall tally of recorded dengue cases throughout Bangladesh has reached 51,837 this year. Public health specialists note that dengue outbreaks in the region typically worsen during the monsoon and post-monsoon months, when stagnant rain waters create ideal breeding grounds for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

Hospitals in the capital city of Dhaka alongside regional healthcare facilities are coming under severe strain as wards continue to fill with infected patients requiring intravenous fluids and close monitoring. Health authorities have repeatedly urged citizens to clear standing water around residential areas, use mosquito nets, and seek immediate medical attention upon exhibiting high fever, severe joint pain, or rash. Despite ongoing local eradication drives and awareness campaigns, public health experts stress the urgent need for more aggressive vector control measures to break the transmission cycle and stem further casualties.
