New Zealand Captain Tom Latham Ruled Out of Zimbabwe Test

New Zealand skipper Tom Latham has been ruled out of the upcoming first Test against Zimbabwe, scheduled to begin Wednesday at the Queens Sports Club, due to a shoulder injury.

In his absence, Mitch Santner, captain of New Zealand’s white-ball team, will take over the leadership role.

A New Zealand Cricket statement released on Tuesday confirmed that Latham sustained the shoulder injury earlier this month while fielding in a T20 match in England, and has not yet fully recovered.

Despite being ruled out of the first Test, Latham will remain with the squad in Zimbabwe, hoping to regain fitness ahead of the second Test, which begins on 7 August.

Santner’s Appointment as Test Captain

With this appointment, Mitch Santner becomes New Zealand’s 32nd men’s Test captain. The left-arm spinner recently led the white-ball team to T20 series victories over Zimbabwe and South Africa, which concluded last Saturday.

“Mitch did a wonderful job with the T20 squad,” said head coach Rob Walter.

“He was excellent from a strategic standpoint and has a strong understanding of the game.”

Santner’s leadership credentials, reinforced by his recent white-ball success, have positioned him as a reliable stand-in for Latham as New Zealand aims for a strong start to the Test series.
