The schedule for the long-anticipated elections to the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and Hall Unions has officially been announced. As per the timetable, nomination submissions will be accepted until 19 August, with the final list of candidates set to be released on 25 August. Voting will take place on 9 September.
The last DUCSU election, held six years ago, saw the ruling party-backed Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) dominate most posts. However, the Vice President (VP) position was famously secured by Nurul Haque Nur, a key figure in the quota reform movement.
In the upcoming election, students will contest a total of 28 positions, including the high-profile roles of Vice President (VP), General Secretary (GS), and Assistant General Secretary (AGS). Responding to the demands of student organisations, four new positions have been introduced:
| Newly Introduced Positions |
|---|
| Research & Publications Secretary |
| Career Development Secretary |
| Health & Environment Secretary |
| Human Rights & Legal Affairs Secretary |
Notable Potential Candidates
Several prominent student leaders and activists—particularly those associated with recent campus movements—are emerging as likely contenders.
| Organisation/Background | Potential Candidate(s) |
| Democratic Students’ Council (Gonotantrik Shikkharthi Parishad) | Abu Bakr Mojumder (Convener), Zahid Ahsan (Member Secretary), Tahmid Al Muddassir Chowdhury (Chief Organiser), Abdul Kader (DU Convener) |
| Anti-Discrimination Student Movement | Umama Fatema (Former Spokesperson) |
| Dhaka University Journalists’ Association | Mohiuddin Mujahid (President) |
Candidates from Major Student Wings
| Organisation | Candidate(s) |
| Chhatra Dal (DU Unit) | Abidul Islam Khan (Joint General Secretary), B. M. Kawsar |
| Chhatra Dal (Jasimuddin Hall Unit) | Tanvir Bari Hamim (Publicity Secretary) |
| Bangladesh Student Union (Left Wing) | Meghmallar Basu (DU President) |
| Revolutionary Student Unity (Biplobi Chhatra Moitri) | Jabir Ahmed |
| Islami Chhatra Shibir (Former & Current) | Abu Sadiq Kayem (Former President), S. M. Farhad (Current President) |
| Students’ Rights Council (Chhatra Odhikar Parishad) | Bin Yamin Molla |
These emerging candidates represent a wide political spectrum, reflecting DU’s traditionally vibrant and pluralistic student politics. Some, like Umama Fatema and Abu Bakr Mojumder, rose to prominence during the July Movement, while others represent established student organisations across ideological lines—from progressive leftists to conservative Islamic platforms.
The run-up to the election is expected to intensify in the coming weeks, as manifestos are announced and alliances begin to take shape. With an expanded set of positions and a politically energised campus, the 2025 DUCSU election promises to be a decisive moment for student leadership at Dhaka University.
