Two college students were killed after a passenger bus bound for Dhaka struck their motorcycle on Dharla Bridge in Kurigram on Thursday night.
The deceased have been identified as Khalid, 21, son of Nur Islam, and Faruk, 25, son of Afsar Ali. Both were residents of the Kachichar area in Kurigram Sadar upazila and were reportedly college students.
The accident occurred at around 8.30pm on 17 September on Dharla Bridge, located on the eastern edge of Kurigram town. According to police and local sources, Khalid and Faruk were returning home from Kurigram town on a motorcycle when a Dhaka-bound passenger bus hit their vehicle on the bridge.
The impact left both riders seriously injured. Local people rushed to the scene after the crash and rescued the two men before taking them to Kurigram General Hospital for treatment.
Doctors at the hospital provided initial medical attention and advised that both patients be transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment because of the severity of their injuries. Their relatives and others accompanying them then began taking them to Rangpur.
However, neither man survived the journey. Both Khalid and Faruk died on the way to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
The accident has left their families and people in the local community mourning the sudden deaths of the two young men. The incident also raised concerns over road safety on the bridge, where vehicles travelling between Kurigram and other parts of the country use the route.
Police said the passenger bus involved in the collision did not remain at the scene. It fled immediately after the accident, making it difficult for authorities to identify the vehicle or its driver at the time.
Kamal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kurigram Sadar Police Station, confirmed the deaths and said the bus had not yet been identified or detained. He added that legal action would be taken if a complaint was filed in connection with the incident.
Police are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision and identify the bus involved as part of any subsequent investigation. Details about the cause of the crash and whether any action has been taken against the vehicle or its driver were not immediately available.
