Sheikh Hasina’s government fell on 5 August 2024 following a massive student-led mass uprising. On the day of her resignation, she fled to India alongside her sister, Sheikh Rehana, and has remained there ever since.

Internal party sources revealed that discussions heavily focused on restructuring the Awami League’s organizational framework ahead of Sheikh Hasina’s announced plans to return to Bangladesh in December to face legal proceedings. The former prime minister previously stated her intention, alongside other senior leaders, to return and appear before domestic courts to answer pending charges.

During the session, attendees delivered speeches assessing Bangladesh’s current political landscape and deliberated on the party’s future strategy. In a notable organizational stance, the Awami League officially declared solidarity with the ongoing programmes of its banned youth wing, the Jubo League.
