One of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded struck Russia’s sparsely populated Far East early Wednesday, generating tsunamis up to four metres high across the Pacific and prompting evacuations from Hawaii to Japan.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the 8.8 magnitude quake occurred off the coast of Petropavlovsk on Russia’s remote Kamchatka Peninsula, ranking among the top ten strongest recorded earthquakes globally.
Impact in Russia
| Location | Impact |
| Severo-Kurilsk | Tsunami flooded the port town; ~2,000 people evacuated |
| Elizovsky District | Waves between 3–4 metres recorded |
| Sakhalin & Kuril Islands | State of emergency declared; mass evacuation |
| Kamchatka Peninsula | Buildings trembled; residents fled in panic |
“The walls were shaking. We grabbed our emergency suitcase and ran,” a Kamchatka resident told state media Zvezda.
Though several people sustained injuries, there were no reports of serious casualties in Russia.
Global Tsunami Alerts
Tsunami warnings and evacuation orders were issued across Pacific coastlines including:
| Country/Region | Warning Level | Notable Impact |
| Japan | Advisory issued to ~2 million residents | 1.3m wave in Iwate; no damage or injuries |
| United States (Hawaii) | Highest-level warning | Evacuations from beaches; traffic congestion |
| Ecuador, Mexico, Chile | Coastal warnings | Urged to avoid beaches |
| Taiwan (Taitung) | Hotel guests advised | Staff kept tourists from venturing to the coast |
| Palau | Full coastal evacuation | Comprehensive safety measures enacted |
“This is not a regular wave. It can kill you,” warned Hawaii Governor Josh Green.
Aftershocks and Historical Parallels
The Kamchatka quake was the region’s strongest since 1952. Several aftershocks followed, including one at magnitude 6.9 and another at 6.3. The epicentre closely matches that of the 1952 quake, which caused a Pacific-wide tsunami.
Notable Comparisons:
The regional seismic monitoring agency warned of further aftershocks up to 7.5 magnitude in the days ahead.
Specific Hazards and Emergency Actions
| Hazard / Area | Description |
| Fukushima Nuclear Plant (Japan) | Workers evacuated as precaution |
| Inage Beach, Chiba (Japan) | Security cordon set; tourists turned away |
| Waikiki Beach (Hawaii) | Sirens sounded; residents fled to higher ground |
| US West Coast (California) | Mobile tsunami alerts pushed to phones |
| Honolulu, Hawaii | Government offices closed early; ships sent to open waters |

Forecasted Tsunami Heights
| Region | Estimated Wave Height |
| Ecuador, N.W. Hawaiian Islands, Russia | Over 3 metres |
| Chile, Costa Rica, French Polynesia, Japan | 1–3 metres |
| Australia, Mexico, New Zealand, Tonga, Taiwan | Up to 1 metre |
The US Tsunami Warning Centers described the sea conditions as “hazardous” and stressed the threat of strong currents and unpredictable surges even in areas where large waves may not reach.
