A devastating series of traffic accidents in Bogura has claimed three lives and left six others injured, highlighting the perilous state of highway safety in northern Bangladesh. The tragedy unfolded in two sequential collisions on Monday morning, where a family transporting the bodies of their deceased relatives from the initial crash was struck again by a second vehicle on their journey home.

The initial incident occurred near the TMSS Medical College and Hospital at Thengamara in Bogura Sadar upazila. A CNG-run auto-rickshaw carrying five passengers towards the medical facility was rammed by a speeding passenger bus. The impact of the crash killed two passengers on the spot: Shafiqul Islam, 45, and Arafat, 16, both residents of the Rampur area in Kahaloo upazila. Three other commuters traveling in the auto-rickshaw sustained severe injuries and were promptly admitted to the adjacent hospital for emergency treatment.

As grieving relatives collected the bodies of Shafiqul and Arafat to transport them home for final rites, tragedy struck a second time. The ambulance carrying the deceased and their immediate family members reached the Ranirhat area of Bogura when an unidentified vehicle crashed into it. The second impact resulted in the death of 52-year-old Khadija Khatun, a resident of Bandighi area in Sadar upazila, whilst three additional family members inside the ambulance suffered serious injuries.

Senior officials from the Kundarhat Highway Police Post confirmed that law enforcement personnel have commenced investigations into both incidents. Police Sergeant Sagar Ali stated that officers are scrutinising CCTV footage and gathering evidence along the route to identify the fleeing vehicles involved in both collisions. Legal proceedings regarding the dual accidents are currently underway as authorities work to establish accountability and apprehend the drivers responsible.

Road accidents remain a persistent critical issue across Bangladesh’s national highways, often exacerbated by reckless driving, overtaking on narrow lanes, and inadequate enforcement of traffic regulations. Local authorities face mounting pressure from residents to implement stricter highway monitoring and improve safety measures at high-risk accident prone zones across the Bogura corridor.
