Former US President Donald Trump has announced the imposition of a 25% tariff on Indian goods, set to take effect from 1 August, raising concerns over escalating trade tensions between the two nations. In addition, Trump hinted at further punitive measures against India, although he did not provide specific details.
Announcement and Justification
The announcement was made on Wednesday (30 July) via a post on Truth Social, Trump’s social media platform. While referring to India as a “friend,” he criticised the country’s trade policies, stating:
Trump further alleged that India is making substantial purchases of military equipment and oil from Russia, even while global calls are being made for Russia to halt its military operations in Ukraine. He remarked:
“This is not good. India must pay a 25% tariff and face penalties for these actions.”
Opaque Penalty Threats
Though Trump clearly articulated the 25% tariff, he refrained from disclosing what the additional ‘penalty measures’ might entail. According to Reuters, this announcement followed an earlier warning on Tuesday, where Trump said that tariffs could rise to 25% if no trade agreement is reached between the US and India.
Reactions from Trade Officials
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer commented on the developments, noting that more negotiations are necessary for a comprehensive trade deal. He stated:
“Delhi has shown interest in opening certain segments of the Indian market. The US is also ready to continue discussions.”
