DHAKA — Police recovered the body of an unidentified man, believed to be around 50 years old, from outside the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Tuesday morning.
Officers from the local Shahbagh Police Station arrived at the scene around 10:30 am after being alerted to an unconscious man lying near the hospital’s emergency gate. He was immediately rushed into the emergency ward, where on-duty physicians declared him dead upon arrival.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the deceased was a destitute vagrant who frequent the medical complex grounds. Speaking to reporters, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Al-Mamun of Shahbagh Police Station confirmed that discussions with hospital ward masters and eyewitnesses indicated the man had been living rough in the surrounding area.
At present, law enforcement officials suspect the fatality was caused by underlying medical complications or natural causes, given the lack of immediate signs of violence. However, official confirmation remains pending. Police noted that the precise cause of death will only be established once the post-mortem examination report is finalized.
To determine the deceased’s identity, authorities have requested assistance from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Crime Scene Unit. Forensic specialists are expected to utilise biometric technology, including fingerprint cross-referencing against national databases, in an effort to trace his family or place of origin.
The body has been moved to the Dhaka Medical College morgue, where it remains pending an autopsy and official identification proceedings.
Incidents involving unidentified destitute individuals found unconscious or deceased near major state-run hospitals are an ongoing challenge for municipal authorities and police forces across the capital. Large public medical facilities like DMCH, located in the central Shahbagh district, routinely attract vulnerable, homeless, and transient individuals seeking shelter, basic necessities, or informal charity. Police have appealed to the public for any information that could lead to identifying the deceased man.
