Police have arrested Md Delwar Hossain Dulal Mia, a former chairman of Bahugram Union Parishad and president of the local Jubo League unit, in Muksedpur, Gopalganj. He has been shown arrested in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act and was subsequently sent to court, police said.
Abdullah Al Mamun, officer-in-charge of Muksedpur Police Station, confirmed the arrest on Thursday, 1 October.
Dulal Mia was arrested from his home in Bahugram Union on Wednesday night, 30 September. According to police, officers conducted the operation after receiving information that he was staying at the residence.
Police said Dulal Mia was taken to the police station following the arrest. After preliminary questioning and completion of the relevant procedures, he was formally shown arrested in the Anti-Terrorism Act case before being sent to court.
The officer-in-charge said police had received information about the former Union Parishad chairman’s presence at his residence and subsequently carried out the operation there. He was then taken into custody and shown arrested in the case before being produced before the court.
According to the police, the case relates to allegations of attempts to create a climate of fear in Gopalganj through acts of sabotage surrounding a rally organised by the National Citizen Party (NCP). Police have alleged that Dulal Mia had links to the activities mentioned in the case, leading to his arrest under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The allegations, however, have not been independently established through a court ruling. Dulal Mia or members of his family did not immediately issue any statement regarding the allegations against him.
Police said the investigation into the case is continuing. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged incidents and the involvement of those named or suspected in connection with the case.
Following his appearance before the court, the next stages of the legal proceedings will depend on the court’s orders and the progress of the investigation.
Dulal Mia previously served as chairman of Bahugram Union Parishad. He also held the position of president of the union Jubo League unit. His arrest has drawn attention in the local political and social circles, where his previous roles in local government and politics have made the development a notable issue.
The case now moves into the judicial process, while police continue their investigation into the allegations and the circumstances surrounding the reported incidents in Gopalganj.
