Day One Recap

Zimbabwe were bundled out cheaply on the first day in Bulawayo, scoring just 149 runs. By stumps, New Zealand were cruising at 92/0, with openers Will Young (41)* and Devon Conway (51)* unbeaten.

New Zealand’s Dominant First Innings

  • Will Young was dismissed for 41 without adding to his overnight score.
  • Devon Conway shared a 66-run second-wicket stand with Henry Nicholls (34).
  • Conway registered his 12th Test half-century, eventually falling short of a century on 88 off 170 balls, laced with 12 boundaries.
  • After Conway’s dismissal at 177, Daryl Mitchell took charge, adding 61 runs for the eighth wicket with Nathan Smith.
  • Mitchell scored a well-crafted 80 runs (5 fours, 1 six), marking his 15th Test fifty, before being the last man out.
  • New Zealand’s innings concluded at 307, securing a 158-run first-innings lead.

Zimbabwe’s Second Innings – A Wobbly Start

Starting their second innings 158 runs behind, Zimbabwe quickly found themselves in trouble:

  • Brian Bennett was dismissed for 18.
  • Ben Curran followed shortly after, out for 11.
  • Nick Welch and Vincent Masakesa remained unbeaten at stumps on 2 and 0, respectively.

With only 31 runs on the board for the loss of two wickets, and still 119 runs behind, Zimbabwe face an uphill task going into Day Three.
