A 45-year-old woman was killed after she was thrown from a battery-powered autorickshaw when a truck collided with the vehicle on the Hajiganj-Ramganj road in Chandpur on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Rehana Akter Lucky, wife of Abdul Kader Bitu Majumder. She was a resident of the Randhunimura area under Ward 10 of Hajiganj Municipality.
According to local residents, Rehana was travelling by battery-powered autorickshaw to her husband’s home when the accident occurred. The vehicle was passing through the Randhunimura area on the southern bank of the Dakatia River when a truck approaching from the opposite direction struck it.
The impact caused Rehana to be thrown out of the autorickshaw and onto the road. She suffered serious injuries in the collision.
People in the area rushed to the scene after hearing the crash and rescued her. She was taken to a hospital in Hajiganj, where doctors provided initial treatment. Given the seriousness of her condition, the attending physician advised that she be transferred to Cumilla for better medical care.
Her family and others subsequently began taking her to Cumilla. However, her condition deteriorated during the journey and she died on the way.
The incident has left Rehana’s family and residents of the Randhunimura area grieving. Her death also underscores the risks faced by passengers travelling in smaller vehicles on roads where they share space with heavy vehicles such as trucks.
Hajiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Mannan said police had seized the truck involved in the crash and taken its driver into custody.
“Legal action will be taken in connection with the incident,” the OC said.
Police will proceed with the necessary legal measures over the collision. The circumstances surrounding the crash, including how the truck and autorickshaw collided, will form part of the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.
