Kenny Bednarek delivered a sensational performance in the men’s 100 metres final at the US Track and Field Championships on Friday, securing his spot at the upcoming Tokyo World Championships with a personal best time of 9.79 seconds, assisted by a legal tailwind of +1.8 m/s.
The competition, held at Eugene’s Hayward Field, saw the fastest men in America compete for a coveted place on the world stage. Bednarek’s victory came as he surged ahead of a tightly contested field, edging out Courtney Lindsey and T’Mars McCallum in an electrifying finish.

Despite clocking his fastest time of the season at 9.86 seconds, 2019 world champion Christian Coleman fell short of qualification, finishing fifth and outside the top three.
His underwhelming performance came amid personal turmoil. Hours before the final, reports surfaced that Coleman had allegedly been involved in a domestic incident with his girlfriend, Sha’Carri Richardson. According to police, Richardson was detained at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport after allegedly shoving Coleman multiple times and throwing a pair of headphones at him. Coleman reportedly declined to cooperate with the investigation.
The incident added a layer of controversy to what was already a fiercely competitive event. With Bednarek leading the American charge, all eyes now turn to Tokyo for what promises to be a thrilling World Championship showdown.
