Couple Arrested Over Alleged Sex Trade in Bhola

A man and his wife have been detained in Monpura, Bhola, over allegations that the husband was arranging sexual services involving his wife in exchange for money. Local residents caught the couple and handed them over to the police, while two alleged clients and a motorcycle rider reportedly fled the scene.

Police also recovered 26 yaba tablets from the woman during the operation.

The incident took place at around 9pm on Friday (6 November) in a bush beside a sluice gate near the old hospital area in Hajirhat Union of Monpura Upazila. Following the detention, the couple were taken into police custody for further legal proceedings.

The detained man, identified as Mizan, is a resident of Ward 6 of North Sakuchia Union No. 3. He is locally known as ‘Jatki Mizan’. His wife, identified by the pseudonym Rani Begum, lives in Ward 4 of South Sakuchia Union No. 4.

According to information gathered from local sources, Mizan brought his wife to the embankment beside the sluice gate in the old hospital area of Hajirhat Union at around 9pm on Thursday. They had travelled from the Banglabazar area of North Sakuchia Union with the assistance of a motorcycle rider named Mazed.

Mazed allegedly acted as an intermediary between Mizan and two prospective clients. According to the allegations, an agreement was reached for Tk 5,000 in exchange for sexual services involving Mizan’s wife.

The arrangement reportedly came to the attention of local residents, prompting the couple to hide in nearby bushes beside the sluice gate. Residents subsequently located them, detained them and handed them over to the police.

However, Mazed and the two alleged clients managed to escape before they could be apprehended.

During the subsequent operation, police recovered 26 yaba tablets from Rani Begum. Yaba, a methamphetamine-based stimulant, is an illegal narcotic in Bangladesh, and possession of the substance can lead to criminal proceedings under the country’s narcotics laws.

During questioning, Mizan and his wife reportedly told police that they had become involved in the alleged sex trade because of financial hardship and the need to earn a living. They denied ownership of the recovered yaba tablets, claiming that Mazed had left the drugs with them before fleeing the scene.

Their claim regarding the ownership of the narcotics has not been independently established. The circumstances surrounding the recovery of the tablets and the alleged involvement of the motorcycle rider remain matters for investigation.

Monpura Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mazaharul Islam confirmed the couple’s detention and said they had been sent to court following the completion of the necessary legal formalities.

The couple were produced before the court at around 11am on Saturday. Further legal proceedings will determine the allegations against them, while the role of the individuals who reportedly fled the scene remains unclear.
