Former US President Joe Biden has issued a stern warning about the current political situation in the United States, describing it as a dark period in the nation’s history. He criticised the Trump administration’s attempts to dismantle the constitutional structure of the executive branch.
Remarks from Biden’s Speech
| Date & Venue | Remarks |
| 31 July, National Bar Association Annual Gala, Chicago | “They are not acting alone; often they have the silent support of a Congress that sits quietly. The Supreme Court seems to be legitimising this process. Their rulings—my God!” |
Biden highlighted the gravity of the moment, stating:
“There are moments in our lives that define our future differently from all previous history. Ruthless actions by the executive office, erosion of fundamental rights, and the undoing of decades-old legal precedents—combined, we have arrived at a critical crossroads.
On the Judiciary and Political Climate
Without explicitly naming Donald Trump, Biden said:
“The importance of the courts, judges, laws and the Constitution is becoming newly apparent to Americans because of the unprecedented pressures faced during this individual’s administration.”
He further accused some legal institutions of bowing to pressure and failing to uphold justice. Biden also criticised leading news outlets and certain politicians for celebrating the Trump administration’s harsh immigration policies, calling such attitudes “terrifying”.
On the Current Administration’s Agenda
Biden alleged that the current administration seeks to erase his achievements:
“They don’t want to make history; they want to erase it. They want to wipe out equality, justice—everything.”
He appealed to the American people:
“Standing for justice means defending those clients who cannot write large cheques but deserve fundamental rights. We must stand firm for justice even when it means angering those in power and courageously resist unconstitutional threats.”
Biden’s Health and Political Challenges
This warning from Biden underscores the fragile state of American democracy and the urgent need for vigilance in safeguarding constitutional rights.
