A 25-year-old pregnant woman was allegedly murdered by her husband in Sreepur, Gazipur, after being attacked with a sharp weapon and having her throat slit, according to local police. The victim, Seema Rani Das, was eight months pregnant at the time of her death. Her husband, Udbhav Das, was detained after police arrived at the scene following a call to Bangladesh’s national emergency service, 999, made by the accused himself.
The incident took place at around 11.30 pm on Sunday, 11 October, in Borochala, within the Chinasukania village area of Rajabari Union in Sreepur Upazila, Gazipur. News of the killing prompted concern among local residents, particularly because the victim was nearing the end of her pregnancy.
Both Seema and her husband were reportedly 25 years old. Udbhav is the son of Nakul Das, a resident of the same village. The couple lived in the area where the incident occurred.
Mohammad Shahinur Alam, officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station, confirmed the incident. According to him, Udbhav contacted the national emergency service on 999 after the alleged killing and informed the authorities about what had happened. Police subsequently travelled to the scene and detained him.
The circumstances surrounding the killing remain unclear. Investigators have yet to establish what prompted the alleged attack, and no confirmed information has emerged about whether the couple had been experiencing marital difficulties or whether another factor may have contributed to the incident.
Police Investigating the Circumstances
The investigation is expected to examine the events leading up to the killing, the circumstances in which it occurred and the actions taken immediately afterwards. Establishing a reliable account of the incident will require investigators to assess the available evidence and obtain statements from relevant individuals.
The police will also need to determine whether there were any earlier disputes or warning signs that could help explain the circumstances surrounding the death. However, no specific motive has been established in the information available so far, and any explanation for the killing would be premature at this stage.
The fact that the accused contacted the emergency service after the incident is part of the reported sequence of events, but it does not, by itself, establish the motive or resolve the questions surrounding the case.
Udbhav Das has been detained in connection with the alleged murder. His detention should not be treated as proof of guilt; the allegations must be assessed through the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.
The death of an eight-month-pregnant woman has brought renewed attention to the need for a thorough examination of the circumstances of serious incidents involving alleged domestic violence. In this case, the immediate priority is to establish what happened, determine the circumstances that led to Seema Rani Das’s death and ensure that any further legal action is supported by evidence.
Further details about the motive and the progress of the investigation had not been confirmed in the initial report published on Monday, 12 October.
