Following the violence, three inmates were relocated to a different prison within Veracruz, though authorities have not revealed their identities or the reason for the transfer.
Cause of the Riot
According to local media, the riot may have been sparked by inmates demanding protection after receiving threats from fellow prisoners allegedly affiliated with a violent criminal group.
Such inter-gang tensions are common in Mexico’s prisons, where overcrowding and poor management often allow organised crime dynamics to spill over behind bars.
This latest incident comes just a month after a similar prison riot in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, which resulted in three inmate deaths. The repetition of such violence highlights the ongoing challenge of maintaining security within Mexico’s penitentiary system.
