Incident Details
On the night of Sunday, 3 August, local NSI officers, supported by the Army, arrested Najmul Hossain. He had been posing as a field officer of the National Security Intelligence (NSI) and accused officials of the Gurudaspur Upazila food warehouse of buying unfit rice.
Najmul further intimidated the officials by showing a forged letter purportedly from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), demanding a bribe to drop the investigation.
District Food Controller Rezaul Haque Khondker explained that Najmul used the false NSI identity to levy false charges. The district food controller’s office senior assistant, Julhas Uddin, contacted the so-called NSI officer to resolve the matter. During the conversation, Najmul demanded 500,000 Taka.
Suspecting foul play, Julhas Uddin alerted the real NSI officials in the district. A plan was then made to apprehend the fraudster.
On the night of the arrest, Julhas Uddin carried the demanded 500,000 Taka in cash to the Model Mosque area in Gurudaspur town, where local NSI officers, backed by army personnel, detained Najmul at the scene when he came to collect the money.
Police Statement
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gurudaspur Police Station, Asmaul Haque, stated that a written complaint has been received against Najmul Hossain. The complaint has been registered as a formal case, and appropriate legal actions will be taken following due process.
