Man Arrested After Assaulting Police Officers Inside Station Grounds

Police in Joypurhat have arrested a 28-year-old man three days after he breached the premises of Kalai Police Station and physically assaulted three police officers with a wooden bat. The suspect, identified as Aslam Hossain, son of Munsur Rahman from Thupsara village within the upazila, was presented before the Joypurhat Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday afternoon.

The violent incident occurred on the evening of 19 October at around 5:30 pm, just as officers inside the station compound were preparing for security deployment ahead of the Durga Puja festival. According to the First Information Report (FIR), Aslam entered the police station complex carrying a heavy wooden bat. When Constable Smriti Akhtar, who was on sentry duty at the gate, approached him to ask his identity and reason for visiting, the suspect launched an unprovoked attack before answering.

The FIR details that Aslam struck Constable Md Mahmudul Hasan Rocky in the face with the wooden bat, causing a deep, bleeding laceration to his left jaw. As Aslam attempted a second blow aiming for the constable’s head, Rocky dodged the strike and sought cover behind the police station’s circular pavilion.

Other personnel stationed within the compound stepped in immediately to restrain the assailant. However, Aslam turned more aggressive, striking driving constable Md Masud Rana across the back, leaving him with severe bruising and abrasions. When Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Ahsan Habib—who later filed the case as the primary complainant—attempted to subdue the attacker, Aslam swung the bat at his head. SI Habib raised his right hand to block the blow, sustaining a deep cut to his right thumb that subsequently required four stitches.

Following the assault, Aslam discarded the wooden bat, shed part of his clothing, and bolted towards the exit. Although he tripped and fell during his escape, he quickly scrambled back to his feet and managed to slip through the main gates. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Md Firoz Sultan and several other officers pursued him on foot, but the suspect managed to vanish into the surrounding neighborhood. The entire sequence of events was recorded on the police station’s closed-circuit television (CCTV) system.

The three injured police officers were promptly transported to the Kalai Upazila Health Complex, where medical personnel administered first aid and stitched SI Habib’s wound. Law enforcement agencies launched a manhunt shortly after the escape, culminating in Aslam’s arrest three days later.

The breach has raised serious safety concerns among local residents regarding security measures at law enforcement facilities. Abdul Qayyum, a local resident, observed that police stations serve as primary sanctuaries for public safety and legal redress. He noted that an individual entering such a facility to attack armed officers before successfully fleeing warrants a thorough internal investigation.

When questioned about the security lapse, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalai Police Station, Saidul Alam, confirmed that the assailant had been apprehended and remanded to court, though he refrained from commenting on how the suspect managed to evade immediate capture despite the presence of multiple personnel inside the precinct.
