A four-year-old child tragically lost his life after falling into a pond at Kaliganj upazila in Gazipur district on Wednesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Deen Islam, also known as Hamza, son of Mashrafil (alias Sohan), a resident of Ramchandrapur village under Moktarpur union within the upazila.
According to family sources, the young boy had recently traveled to Ramchandrapur with his mother to visit his maternal grandparents’ home. On Wednesday morning, while playing in the courtyard adjacent to the house, the child slipped away unnoticed and fell into a nearby pond.
At approximately 10:30 am, relatives noticed his absence and initiated a search across the neighborhood. After failing to find him on land, family members searched the pond, where they eventually located his submerged body.
Hamza was immediately pulled out of the water and rushed to the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex. Upon arrival, the duty doctor at the emergency department pronounced the child dead.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaliganj Police Station, Md Zakir Hossain, confirmed the occurrence, stating that necessary legal procedures regarding the accidental death have been duly initiated.
Drowning remains one of the leading causes of silent fatalities among young children in rural areas across Bangladesh. According to public health data, rural homestead ponds—often located just paces from living quarters—present an omnipresent risk for toddlers who lack supervision, particularly during the morning hours when caregivers are occupied with daily household chores. Public health organisations consistently advocate for basic physical barriers, such as bamboo fencing around domestic water bodies, alongside heightened vigil, to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
