Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) has arrested Md Nayan Hossain, the convener of the Adabar Thana unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), following explicit allegations of extortion and disrupting public infrastructure development in the capital’s Adabar area.
The arrest took place on Wednesday, 21 October, following complaints that Nayan had actively obstructed ongoing drainage and sewage development works managed by the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). Local reports also indicate that he had been systematically demanding protection money from various property owners and developers operating across the neighbourhood.
Deputy Commissioner of the Tejgaon DB Division, Md Ziauddin, confirmed the arrest, stating that detectives conducted an operation targeting the student leader after receiving formal allegations regarding his illicit activities. Law enforcement officers moved in to apprehend Nayan to prevent further disruption to public utilities and restore order in the locality.
Commenting on the development, Jahidur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Adabar Police Station, acknowledged the police operation, noting that while he was informed of the arrest by the Detective Branch, the suspect had not yet been formally transferred to local precinct custody at the time of reporting. He added that details regarding the specific charges and statutory provisions filed against the accused would be clarified once the formal handover process was complete.
Extortion around municipal construction projects and residential developments remains a persistent issue in urban centres across Bangladesh, often creating severe delays in essential infrastructure upgrades. The government and law enforcement authorities have increasingly intensified drives against local extortion rings to ensure that public service development, particularly civil engineering efforts to improve municipal drainage systems ahead of seasonal waterlogging, proceeds without unlawful hindrance.
The arrest of a senior local figure within JCD—the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)—underlines an ongoing police crackdown against political cadres and local influencers allegedly involved in criminal patronage and financial extortion. Detective officials reiterated that investigative efforts are currently underway to identify any accomplices associated with Nayan’s network, ensuring that those seeking to compromise public development projects are brought swiftly to justice under the law.
