Two Killed in Head-on Collision on Cox’s Bazar Highway

Two people were killed when a passenger bus collided head-on with a vegetable-laden pickup on the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar Highway in Chakaria, Cox’s Bazar, police said.

The accident occurred at around 12.30 am on Friday (22 October) in the Sabuj Pahar area of Nayapara, within Khutakhali Union of Chakaria. Both victims were travelling in the pickup, which was carrying vegetables towards Cox’s Bazar from Chakaria.

The deceased were identified as Abdullah and Md Yasin. Abdullah was the son of Abul Kalam and came from Fuler Dail in the Hnila area of Teknaf upazila. Yasin was the son of Md Dulal and a resident of Rampur in the Saharbill area of Matamuhuri.

According to police, a Dhaka-bound Shyamoli NR Paribahan passenger bus collided head-on with the pickup travelling from Chakaria towards Cox’s Bazar. The impact left the two men with critical injuries.

Officers from Malumghat Highway Police Station reached the scene after receiving information about the crash. With assistance from local residents, they recovered the two victims and took them to the upazila health complex. Doctors there subsequently declared both men dead.

Md Selim Mia, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and the officer-in-charge of Malumghat Highway Police Station, said the victims had sustained severe injuries to their heads and other parts of their bodies. Legal proceedings in connection with the incident were under way, he added.

The precise circumstances that led to the collision had not been established immediately. Police had not provided further details about the speed of either vehicle or the factors that may have contributed to the crash. The investigation is expected to help clarify how the accident occurred.

The Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar Highway is an important transport route in south-eastern Bangladesh, connecting the port city of Chattogram with Cox’s Bazar and surrounding areas. It carries passenger buses, private vehicles and commercial transport, including vehicles moving agricultural produce between local markets and destinations further afield.

Collisions involving passenger buses and goods vehicles can have serious consequences, particularly when they occur head-on. Safe speeds, careful overtaking and close attention to road conditions are important on busy highways, especially during late-night journeys when visibility and driver alertness may be reduced.

However, the cause of this particular accident remains unconfirmed, and responsibility should not be assigned until the relevant facts have been established.

The deaths of Abdullah and Yasin have left their families facing a sudden loss. Police are continuing the legal process related to the incident.
