The deceased have been identified as Bidhan Biswas, 22, son of Binoy Biswas from Sabdalpur Union in Sreepur upazila, and Alamgir Laskar, 38, son of Adam Laskar from Bakira village in the same upazila.
According to family members, the two men became suddenly ill after consuming alcohol on Wednesday night, 21 October. They initially received treatment locally, but their conditions subsequently deteriorated. As their health grew more serious, they were taken to Magura 250-bed Hospital late that night.
Despite receiving medical treatment, both men died on Friday morning, hospital officials said.
Supriya Saha, Bidhan Biswas’s aunt, said the two men had fallen ill after drinking on Wednesday night and were taken to hospital for treatment. Further details about the type of alcohol they consumed and the circumstances surrounding the incident have not yet been confirmed.
Imran Hossain, the doctor on duty at Magura 250-bed Hospital, said the bodies had been sent to the hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations. He indicated that consuming an alcoholic substance might have been responsible for their deaths, but stressed that the findings of the examinations would be needed to establish the actual cause.
Police have also begun examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. Ali Mia, officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station, said the preliminary investigation suggested that alcohol consumption might have led to the deaths. However, the precise cause remains uncertain pending further findings.
The incident has raised concerns about the potential dangers associated with consuming alcohol of unknown composition. Certain alcoholic products, particularly those containing toxic substances, can cause severe illness and may be fatal. However, there is currently no confirmed evidence that the two men consumed contaminated or adulterated alcohol.
The post-mortem reports are expected to help clarify the circumstances of the deaths. Information about the substance consumed, the symptoms experienced by the men and the progression of their illnesses may also be relevant to determining what happened.
For now, both the police and hospital authorities have treated alcohol consumption as a possible explanation rather than a confirmed cause of death. Further conclusions will depend on the medical findings and the outcome of the investigation.
