Barcelona was the setting for the most successful and formative period of Messi’s football career. It was where he developed from a talented teenager into one of the greatest players in the history of the game, collecting major trophies, breaking records and building relationships that extended well beyond the pitch. The city also became home to his family, giving his long association with the club a deeply personal significance.
Messi arrived in Oviedo on Thursday with his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, amid enthusiastic welcomes from supporters. The Argentina captain, who led his country to World Cup glory, was scheduled to receive the Princess of Asturias Award in the sports category on Friday.
Speaking to Spanish news agency EFE, Messi looked back fondly on his years at Barcelona, emphasising that the experience was about far more than winning matches and lifting trophies.
“We were fortunate to win everything. The way we played, enjoyed our victories and achieved all the important things was wonderful. But, above all, we also enjoyed our everyday lives and training sessions; we had a really good time,” he said.
His remarks offer a glimpse into the personal memories behind one of football’s most celebrated careers. While supporters often associate Messi’s Barcelona years with spectacular goals, major finals and historic achievements, he also treasures the ordinary moments shared with teammates during training and daily life at the club.
A career defined by extraordinary success
Messi’s journey at Barcelona began when he was a teenager. Over nearly two decades, he established himself as the club’s record goalscorer and appearance-maker, becoming central to one of the most successful periods in its history.
During his time at the club, he won 10 La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League trophies, alongside numerous other domestic and international honours. His individual achievements were equally remarkable, with a record eight Ballon d’Or awards recognising his exceptional contribution to the sport.
His technical ability, close control, creativity and remarkable scoring consistency made him a defining figure in European football. Messi was instrumental in Barcelona’s domestic dominance and success on the continental stage, while his performances helped establish a benchmark for generations of attacking players.
Yet, despite the extraordinary number of trophies he collected, his latest reflections suggest that the friendships, shared experiences and sense of belonging were just as important to him.
An emotional departure in 2021
Messi’s departure from Barcelona in August 2021 marked the end of an era. The club’s financial difficulties and problems with registering a new contract prevented an agreement from being completed, forcing him to leave the side where he had spent almost his entire professional career.
He subsequently joined Paris Saint-Germain, spending two seasons with the French club before moving to the United States in July 2023. He has since represented Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, beginning a new chapter in a career that has taken him from European football to the American game.
Although his professional journey has moved on, Barcelona remains an important part of his identity. His departure was not simply a change of club; it meant leaving behind a city that had shaped much of his personal life.
All three of Messi’s children were born in Barcelona. The city therefore holds memories that extend beyond football, encompassing family life and the years in which he grew into adulthood while establishing himself as a global sporting icon.
A bond that trophies cannot fully explain
Messi’s description of Barcelona’s importance as something difficult to express in a few words reflects the depth of his attachment to the club. His relationship with the Catalan side was built over many years, through triumphs, disappointments and the everyday experiences of life as a professional footballer.
For Barcelona supporters, Messi remains closely associated with an extraordinary era of success. His goals, performances and contribution to the club’s identity have secured his place among its greatest-ever players.
Now playing for Inter Miami, the Argentine continues his career in a different footballing environment. Yet his return to Spain has brought renewed attention to the years that defined his rise to greatness.
For Messi, Barcelona represents much more than a collection of records and silverware. It is where he achieved the highest honours of club football, formed lasting relationships and built a family life. His latest comments serve as a reminder that, even for a player whose achievements can be measured in goals and trophies, the most meaningful chapters of a career are often those that are hardest to describe.
