Woman Killed by Train in Jessore, Police Collect Fingerprints

An unidentified woman, believed to be around 50 years old, was killed after being struck by an intercity train in Abhaynagar upazila of Jessore on Saturday morning. The impact left her body dismembered, with the remains scattered beside the railway tracks. Railway police have collected her fingerprints in an effort to establish her identity.

The accident occurred at around 8am on 24 October near the DN Textile railway crossing, close to the Abhaynagar Upazila Parishad. The train involved was the intercity Rupsha Express, which was travelling from Khulna to Jessore.

According to local eyewitnesses, the woman was seen sitting on the railway tracks at around 7.30am. At 7.51am, the Rupsha Express, which had departed from Khulna, passed through the area. The woman was struck by the train and died at the scene.

The circumstances in which she came to be sitting on the tracks remain unclear. No immediate information was available to establish whether the incident was accidental or whether other factors were involved.

Parash Islam, the gateman on duty at the DN Textile railway crossing, said the woman’s body had been torn into seven or eight pieces and scattered along the side of the tracks. He said the incident was reported to senior railway authorities immediately after it occurred.

Mintu Kumar Roy, station master at Nawapara railway station, confirmed the death. He said the woman had been killed after being struck by the Rupsha Express, but her name and address were not immediately known.

Railway police subsequently arrived at the scene to recover the remains. Mohammad Ziaur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Khulna Railway Police, said officers reached the location after receiving the report and recovered the body at around 10.30am.

He explained that the extent of the injuries had made it impossible to identify the woman by examining her face. As a result, police collected her fingerprints to help establish her identity by checking them against national identity card records and other biometric information.

Fingerprint verification is expected to assist investigators in determining who the woman was and, once her identity is confirmed, contacting her relatives. However, her identity had not been established immediately after the recovery of the body.

The remains are being prepared for transfer to the mortuary at Jessore 250-bed General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The examination is part of the procedures following the death, while railway police are also taking the necessary legal steps in connection with the incident.

The investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death. Until further information becomes available, the reason she was on the railway tracks remains unknown.

The incident has also drawn attention to the dangers of remaining on railway lines, particularly when trains are approaching. However, authorities have yet to establish the precise circumstances that led to the fatal accident.
