A devastating road accident claimed the lives of a father and his young son early on Saturday morning after they were struck by an unidentified vehicle on the busy Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Gazipur’s Tongi area.
The victims have been identified as 50-year-old Tapon Chandra Das and his 20-year-old son, Likhon Chandra Das. Hailing originally from the Kaibartapara area in Dewan ganj Upazila, located in the northern district of Jamalpur, the duo had been residing in the Gazipur City Corporation area near the Gazipurpura 27 Chowrasta intersection under Tongi West Police Station.
According to local eyewitnesses and law enforcement officials, the tragic incident occurred during the early hours of Saturday near the Kutumbari Hotel, situated on the eastern side of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane in Gazipurpura. The father and son were attempting to navigate the highway when a fast-moving vehicle rammed into them, leaving both critically injured on the tarmac before the driver sped away from the scene.
Upon receiving immediate notification of the crash, a team from the local police station rushed to the spot to render assistance. The injured pair were swiftly evacuated and transported to the Tongi Shahid Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital. Upon arrival, attending medical staff evaluated the victims and tragically pronounced Likhon dead.
Due to the severity of his injuries, Tapon Chandra Das was quickly transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for specialised treatment and advanced emergency care. Despite the best efforts of the medical team in the capital, he succumbed to his injuries at approximately 9:30 AM.
Maksudul Alam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tongi East Police Station, confirmed the sequence of events and noted that both bodies have been deposited in the hospital mortuaries. Law enforcement authorities have commenced necessary legal procedures regarding the hit-and-run incident, and the bodies will be handed over to the bereaved family members once the official formalities and post-mortem examinations are completed.
This fatal crash underscores the persistent hazards on the heavily congested Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, an vital artery connecting the capital with northern Bangladesh. The ongoing construction and operational adjustments surrounding the Bus Rapid Transit project have frequently been cited by local commuters as factors contributing to chaotic traffic patterns and elevated pedestrian risks during off-peak and early morning hours.
