Unidentified miscreants carried out an arson attack on a branch of Grameen Bank in the Bagadi area of Chandpur district during the early hours of Saturday. Following the incident, the branch manager, Mahmuda Akter, lodged a formal written complaint with the Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station on Saturday afternoon to initiate a full investigation.
The attack took place at approximately 3:00 AM on Friday night, targeting the residential quarter on the second floor of the bank building. According to Mahmuda Akter, the perpetrators smashed a glass window pane from outside and hurled a petrol-filled bottle into the living quarters. The inflammable liquid ignited rapidly, engulfing the interior furnishings in flames and causing noticeable structural damage to that section of the building.
Nitya Hawlader, an office assistant stationed at the branch, recounted the frightening moments as flames spread through the shattered window. Recognising the immediate danger, the occupants rushed outside to safety before dialling the national emergency helpline, 999, to alert the fire brigade. Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly afterwards and managed to douse the blaze before it could spread to the primary banking floors below.
Initial assessments provided by bank staff estimate the financial losses at around 200,000 BDT, mostly comprising destroyed furniture, personal belongings, clothing, and damaged fixtures within the residential quarters. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported, as the personnel managed to evacuate the premises swiftly.
Senior law enforcement officials conducted an on-site inspection later on Saturday afternoon to evaluate the scene and gather forensic evidence. The visiting delegation included Chandpur Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman, Additional Superintendent of Police Khairul Kabir, and senior officers from the local Sadar Model Police Station.
Police officers at the scene confirmed that a formal inquiry is underway. Investigators are actively reviewing nearby surveillance footage and interviewing eyewitnesses to identify the perpetrators responsible for the arson attack and bring them to justice.
