A four-year-old girl named Zakiya lost her life on Saturday afternoon after being crushed by a soil-laden tractor in Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila. The fatal collision occurred around 12:30 PM in Kamta East Para village, situated under the Madhuhati Union.
Zakiya was the youngest daughter of Jafirul Islam, a resident of Kamta village. The sudden tragedy has cast a heavy pall of gloom over the quiet rural community, leaving her family utterly devastated.
According to family members and local residents, Zakiya had been playing alongside several other neighbourhood children near the edge of an unpaved village road throughout the morning. Troubles arose when a heavy tractor transporting soil approached the area at considerable speed, sounding its loud horn. Startled by the sudden noise, the frightened child panicked and attempted to rush across the road to safety. Tragically, she ran directly into the path of the oncoming vehicle and was crushed under its heavy wheels, dying instantly at the scene.
Altaf Hossain, Chairman of the Madhuhati Union Parishad, confirmed the sequence of events. He noted that the child was playing near the roadside when the blaring horn startled her into crossing unexpectedly. Following the crash, the tractor driver, identified as Masud—son of Nazrul from the same village—abandoned the heavy machinery and fled the scene to evade arrest.
Officers from the Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station arrived shortly after being alerted by panic-stricken villagers. Law enforcement personnel recovered the young girl’s body and prepared a preliminary surge report before transporting the remains to the Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital morgue for an official post-mortem examination.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station, Md. Asaduzzaman, confirmed the details of the incident. He stated that the body was dispatched to the district hospital morgue to complete the required legal and medical procedures. He added that police teams are actively pursuing the absconding driver, Masud, to bring him into custody. Formal legal proceedings will commence as soon as the grieving family lodges an official written complaint.
