A local political leader in Lalmohan Upazila of Bhola district succumbed to his injuries on Saturday afternoon following a violent assault triggered by a minor dispute over a bean trellis.
The victim, 45-year-old Md Firoz, served as the Joint General Secretary of the Kalma Union (North) Jubo Dal, the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He was the son of Kashem Ali from the Doctor Bari area near Member Dokan in Ward No. 8 of Kalma Union.
The fatal altercation stemmed from a disagreement regarding a small patch of land within the shared residential compound. On Thursday, Firoz planted bean saplings on his land adjacent to the residence of his neighbour, Kajal, and erected a bamboo trellis to support the plants. Tensions flared on Friday afternoon when Kajal’s wife, Jannat, chopped down the structure following the weekly Friday prayers.
Upon returning from the mosque, Firoz discovered the damaged trellis and confronted Jannat. The discussion quickly escalated into a heated verbal argument. According to eyewitnesses and local residents, Jannat’s husband, Kajal, joined the confrontation armed with a sharp machete and launched a sudden, vicious attack, hacking Firoz repeatedly across his body.
Locals rescued the severely injured Firoz and rushed him to the Lalmohan Upazila Health Complex. Attending doctors administered emergency care before transferring him to Bhola Sadar Hospital due to the severity of his wounds and heavy blood loss. As his condition deteriorated rapidly, family members transported him to the capital for advanced medical intervention. Firoz was placed on life support at Supermax Healthcare Limited, a private hospital in Dhaka, where he passed away on Saturday afternoon.
Police officers visited the crime scene shortly after receiving reports of the violence. Sub-Inspector Md Nurul Amin of Lalmohan Police Station confirmed that law enforcement personnel inspected the location and detained the prime suspect, Kajal. Formal murder charges are currently being prepared as the victim’s family prepares to file an official case.
