Brazilian football icon Ronaldinho is set to make a sensational return to competitive football at the age of 46, lacing up his boots once again for Italian third-tier outfit Ravenna.
The former Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and AC Milan star will feature in a high-stakes derby against fierce rivals Forlì on 15 November. Ravenna confirmed the landmark arrangement in an official statement released on Friday, sending shockwaves of excitement across the sporting world.
Ronaldinho, who lifted the FIFA World Cup with Brazil in 2002 and claimed the coveted Ballon d’Or in 2005, last played a competitive fixture for Brazilian side Fluminense back in 2015. He officially announced his retirement from all formats of professional football in 2018. However, his enduring passion for the sport has drawn him back into competitive action.
The groundwork for his return began in June when the iconic playmaker signed an agreement with Ravenna. Beyond his role on the pitch, Ronaldinho acquired an ownership stake in the club alongside his close friend and primary owner, Ignazio Cipriani. Speaking about the venture, Cipriani explained that bringing an international icon like Ronaldinho to the club forms part of a broader ambition to connect the local community with Ravenna FC and elevate its global profile.
Upon his arrival in Italy in August, Ronaldinho initially remained tight-lipped regarding his playing status, though he dropped hints about the enticing prospect of reaching 300 career goals. With a characteristic smile, the Samba legend simply remarked that he was there to support the team in any way possible.
That anticipation will culminate next month at the Stadio Bruno Benelli, where Ravenna host Forlì in a crucial league derby. Ravenna currently sit second in the Serie C standings, holding 20 points from 10 matches, trailing league leaders Spezia by eight points. Spectators and football enthusiasts worldwide now await 15 November to see if the legendary midfielder can recreate his trademark magic on the pitch once more.
