A 45-year-old man and his six-year-old daughter were killed after a fish-laden pick-up truck crushed their auto-rickshaw in Muksedpur, Gopalganj, on Sunday morning. The fatal collision occurred on the Garakhola Bridge along the Dhaka-Khulna Highway, leaving two members of the same family dead.
The victims were identified as Saiful Islam Ronju, 45, and his daughter, Samira Akter, aged six. Ronju was the son of Hemayet Molla and a resident of Paban Beg village in Alfadanga upazila of Faridpur district.
According to Muksedpur police and local sources, the pick-up truck was travelling towards Gopalganj when it collided with an auto-rickshaw approaching from the opposite direction. The three-wheeler was heading towards Muksedpur at the time of the accident.
The impact left Ronju and his daughter seriously injured. Local residents rushed to the scene and rescued the pair before taking them to Muksedpur Upazila Health Complex for treatment. However, the attending doctors declared both dead after they arrived at the hospital.
The sudden loss of a father and his young daughter has cast a shadow of grief over their family. The incident also highlights the devastating consequences of road collisions, particularly when vehicles travelling in opposite directions meet on busy highways.
Muksedpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the deaths. He said the bodies would be handed over to the family after the necessary legal formalities had been completed.
The police have not provided detailed information about the precise circumstances that led to the collision. It remains unclear whether excessive speed, driver negligence or another factor contributed to the crash. Further information would be needed to establish the cause of the accident.
The Dhaka-Khulna Highway is an important transport route connecting the capital with Bangladesh’s south-western region. It carries a mixture of passenger and freight traffic, including buses, trucks, pick-up vehicles and auto-rickshaws. The variety of vehicles using the same road makes careful driving and adherence to traffic regulations essential for reducing the risk of collisions.
Accidents involving larger vehicles and smaller passenger transport can have particularly severe consequences because auto-rickshaws offer relatively limited protection to occupants in a collision. Maintaining a safe speed, keeping an appropriate distance from other vehicles and exercising caution when approaching bridges and other potentially hazardous sections of a road are important road-safety measures.
The deaths of Ronju and Samira have once again drawn attention to the human cost of road accidents. While the exact cause of Sunday’s collision has not yet been established, the incident underlines the need for responsible driving and greater care by all road users to help prevent similar tragedies.
