An 80-year-old woman was killed at her home in Daganbhuiyan, Feni, after being attacked with a cleaver by her daughter, who has a history of severe mental illness.
The fatal incident occurred at around 8:00 pm on Sunday, 25 October 2026, in East Chandrapur village under Daganbhuiyan Upazila. Police responded swiftly to the scene and detained the victim’s 27-year-old daughter, Rina Akter, recovering the weapon used in the attack.
According to local residents and law enforcement officials, Rina Akter had been suffering from long-standing mental health conditions. She had recently travelled from her husband’s residence to visit her parental home in East Chandrapur. On Sunday evening, while inside the house with her elderly mother, Setara Begum, Rina suddenly attacked her with a heavy kitchen cleaver (boti).
Following the violent assault, Rina bolted the front door from the inside, locking both herself and her injured mother inside the room. Setara Begum suffered severe deep lacerations and bled to death at the scene before help could reach her.
Alarmed by commotion from inside the residence, neighbours gathered outside the locked premises. Upon discovering that the door was secured from the inside and receiving no coherent response, they contacted the local police station.
Officers from Daganbhuiyan Police Station arrived at the location shortly afterwards. With the assistance of local residents, police forced entry into the house, where they discovered Setara Begum’s body lying in a pool of blood. Officers apprehended Rina Akter on the spot and seized the blood-stained cleaver used in the killing.
Police completed the preliminary inquest at the scene before transferring the body to the Feni Sadar Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination to establish the precise cause of death.
The Incident Officer, Faijul Azim Noman, Officer-in-Charge of Daganbhuiyan Police Station, confirmed the arrest and stated that legal proceedings are currently underway. Investigators are preparing a formal murder case while collecting forensic evidence and statement recordings from family members and local residents.
