Unidentified Youth Attack CPB Headquarters in Paltan Sparking Tensions

A group of unidentified young men launched an unprovoked attack on Muktibhaban, the central headquarters of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) in Dhaka’s Purana Paltan area, on Monday night (26 October). The incident, which occurred at approximately 10:00 pm, triggered widespread tension across the locality as opposing groups gathered nearby to chant slogans against each other.
Sajjad Zahir Chandan, President of the CPB Central Committee, held activists affiliated with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami responsible for the violence. Local leaders of the BNP, however, firmly rejected the allegations, denying any involvement in the assault.
According to party sources and local officials, the unrest stemmed from an incident earlier in the evening involving Dipak Sheel, former president of the Bangladesh Students’ Union. Police detained Sheel before releasing him shortly after. Following his release, a group of his supporters reportedly celebrated outside, allegedly chanting the political slogan “Joy Bangla”. Outraged by the slogan, an aggrieved group of individuals marched towards the CPB headquarters and carried out the attack.
CPB President Sajjad Zahir Chandan strongly refuted claims that anyone within Muktibhaban chanted political slogans, describing the assault as a deliberate and unprovoked raid on their party premises.
Providing details on the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Paltan Police Station, Ariful Islam, confirmed that the commotion began after Dipak Sheel’s supporters chanted slogans upon his release. The chanting angered nearby individuals, prompting them to target the CPB office.
OC Ariful Islam noted that while CPB leaders attributed the assault to BNP and Jamaat activists, local BNP members denied the charge completely. Law enforcement authorities have opened an investigation into the matter to determine the exact sequence of events and identify those responsible. To prevent further violence, police units deployed quickly to the area, taking up positions between the rival groups to maintain order and keep the situation under control.
