Sonargaon University launched their campaign in the ABG University Cup 2026 football tournament with a narrow 1-0 victory over the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) in a fiercely contested fixture.
The Group B match kicked off at 6:30 pm on Monday, 26 October, at the Bashundhara Kings Arena in Dhaka. Both sides displayed high intensity from the opening whistle, exchanging rapid counter-attacks as they sought to establish early dominance in the midfield.
The decisive moment arrived early in the first half following back-to-back set-piece opportunities for Sonargaon University. In the sixth minute, ULAB conceded a dangerous free-kick just outside their penalty area after an mistimed challenge. The ULAB goalkeeper produced a fine save to palm away the initial strike over the crossbar, conceding a corner.
From the resulting corner in the seventh minute, Sonargaon striker Rashed rose above the defence at the near post to direct a powerful header past the goalkeeper into the net. Rashed’s clinical finish broke the deadlock, giving Sonargaon University a 1-0 lead. ULAB pressed forward to equalise before the interval, but Sonargaon maintained their structure to hold the lead into half-time.
The second half saw ULAB intensify their attacking efforts in search of an equaliser. They pushed players forward and created several half-chances, but Sonargaon’s defensive line remained resilient. Sonargaon also threatened on the counter-attack to extend their advantage, though neither side managed to alter the scoreline before the final whistle.
The 1-0 victory earned Sonargaon University all three points in their opening Group B match, putting them in a strong position in the tournament standings. Following their recent success in university-level cricket competitions, Sonargaon University have carried their impressive sporting momentum into the football championship.
