A student political leader in Lakshmipur has been expelled from his party after launching a violent assault on a fellow activist inside the emergency department of a local government hospital.
The political organisation, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), took swift disciplinary action against Shahidul Islam Sahed on Monday afternoon following widespread outrage over the incident. A press release jointly signed by Lokman Hossain Joy, convenor of the Dalal Bazar Degree College JCD unit, and Member Secretary Ikram Mahmud Fahad confirmed that Sahed has been stripped of his primary membership and relieved of all party responsibilities. Sahed previously served as the convenor of the Dalal Bazar Degree College unit and was actively campaigning for the post of general secretary for Ward 3 JCD within Lakshmipur Municipality.
The violence erupted on Sunday night inside Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital. The victim, Jewel Hossain Nirob, serves as the senior vice-president of the Ward 1 Jatiyatabadi Swechhasebak Dal in Lakshmipur Municipality. According to hospital authorities and eyewitness accounts, the confrontation began earlier in the afternoon over a dispute involving the buying and selling of a mobile phone. Following a physical altercation, Jewel sought medical attention at the hospital for minor injuries.
Upon learning that Jewel was receiving treatment at the medical facility, Sahed arrived at the hospital accompanied by a group of supporters. Fearing further violence, Jewel attempted to seek refuge inside the emergency room. However, the perpetrators breached the medical bay, ignoring hospital decorum and safety protocols.
Once inside the emergency room, Sahed and his accomplices launched a brutal assault on Jewel, striking him repeatedly with plastic chairs, punching, and kicking him until he was left severely bleeding and seriously injured. The chaotic assault created immense panic among patients, medical staff, and visitors.
Footage capturing the attack was recorded on mobile phones and quickly circulated across social media platforms, sparking intense criticism over the breach of security inside a healthcare facility. Due to the severity of his injuries, medical personnel referred Jewel to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
Efforts to contact Sahed for comment proved unsuccessful as he went into hiding following the incident. Addressing the matter, district JCD leader Hasibur Rahman Ovi stated that the party maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards discipline violations and criminal behaviour, confirming that Sahed no longer holds any affiliation with the organisation.
