Rumi Is Leaving the Country, Says in Farewell Message: ‘Take Care, Everyone’

Shahjalal Rumi, the father of a seven-year-old child who was sexually abused at a madrasa in Tongi, has fled Bangladesh after facing a retaliation lawsuit from the institution’s management.
Rumi confirmed his departure on Monday evening around 8:00 pm via a text message sent to media outlets. Expressing deep anguish over the turn of events, he stated, “I am no longer in this country. I am not thinking about these things anymore. Whatever happens, let it happen. May you all stay well.” Although he confirmed his departure, Rumi refrained from revealing his current overseas location or destination.
In the same message, Rumi expressed profound disillusionment with the principal of the Qariul Quran International Cadet Madrasa in Auchpara, Tongi. “Despite being an Islamic scholar, he has told many lies and continues to do so,” Rumi wrote, criticising the management’s efforts to distort the facts surrounding the incident.
The troubling sequence of events began on 21 October, when the seven-year-old student was sexually assaulted inside the madrasa premises. Upon discovering the abuse, an enraged Rumi confronted the accused teacher, Md Moslem Uddin, and physically assaulted him at the facility before handing him over to law enforcement officers. Footage of the confrontation subsequently went viral across social media platforms, sparking intense public anger and nationwide condemnation.
Following the suspect’s arrest, Rumi immediately filed a formal sexual abuse case against Moslem Uddin at the Tongi West Police Station, seeking justice for his young child.
However, the case took a contentious turn shortly afterwards. Rather than cooperating with the investigation, the madrasa principal filed a counter-lawsuit against Rumi. The complaint alleged that the victim’s father had committed various offences, including the theft of 1.7 million BDT from the institution’s premises.
Faced with severe legal harassment, intimidation, and the prospect of fighting a fabricated theft case while seeking justice for his abused child, Rumi went into hiding to ensure his safety. His decision to leave the country marks a tragic conclusion to a desperate struggle for accountability.
