Fatal Land Dispute Leaves Younger Brother Dead in Magura

A long-standing agrarian disagreement between siblings reached a devastating climax on Tuesday morning, leaving a 45-year-old man dead following a violent altercation in southwestern Bangladesh.

The incident occurred in the tranquil village of Naghosha, situated within the Shalikha Upazila of Magura district. Local authorities reported that the deceased, identified as Masud Gazi, was struck down by his elder brother, Siddique Gazi, during a heated argument over ancestral land.

Tensions surrounding the division of real estate inherited from their late father had been simmering between the brothers for a considerable period. What began as an exchange of bitter words on Tuesday morning quickly escalated into a physical confrontation. According to witnesses and preliminary police findings, Siddique Gazi picked up a heavy wooden stick during the altercation and struck Masud with fatal force. The impact caused Masud to collapse instantly, dying at the scene before medical assistance could be summoned.

Officers from the Shalikha Police Station arrived shortly after being alerted by neighbours who heard the violent clash. Ashikur Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shalikha Police Station, confirmed the details of the fatal encounter. He stated that law enforcement swiftly launched an investigation upon reaching the village to secure evidence and bring order to the community.

In the immediate aftermath of the killing, police detained two women for questioning to determine their exact role or involvement in the altercation. The detainees have been identified as Kakoli Begum, the wife of the primary suspect Siddique Gazi, and Setu Begum, the wife of their younger brother, Babul Gazi. Both individuals are currently in police custody as investigations proceed.

The victim’s body has been transferred to the morgue at Magura Sadar Hospital, where a formal post-mortem examination will take place to establish the precise cause of death. Meanwhile, police teams are conducting raids to trace and apprehend Siddique Gazi, who fled the village immediately following the fatal strike.

Land ownership disputes remain a widespread catalyst for rural conflict across Bangladesh, where inherited agricultural plots are frequently fragmented among surviving relatives. With formal legal resolution often taking years through overloaded local court systems, underlying property friction between family members can ignite sudden violence over boundary lines or inheritance entitlements. Shalikha police have assured the public that a formal murder case is being filed and that all necessary legal proceedings are underway.
