A Jamaat-e-Islami leader in Shibchar, Madaripur, has been relieved of his party responsibilities following allegations involving an allegedly compromising situation with a woman. The incident attracted attention after a video circulated on social media, prompting the leader, Taizul Islam, to claim that the woman shown in the footage was his wife.
The Shibchar upazila unit of Jamaat-e-Islami announced the decision in a statement issued on Tuesday. The statement was signed by Yusuf Hawlader, secretary of the upazila unit.
According to the statement, Taizul Islam was not formally the president of any organisational unit, although he had been carrying out responsibilities in that capacity. The party said he had been relieved of his duties after allegations were raised against him.
The statement did not provide further details about the allegations or explain whether a formal investigation had been completed before the decision was taken.
In a post on his personal Facebook account, Taizul Islam claimed that the woman seen in the video circulating on social media was his wife. His statement represents his own account of the incident, and the claim has not been independently verified.
The controversy has drawn attention to both the party’s decision and the competing questions surrounding the footage. However, the circulation of a video on social media does not, by itself, establish the identities of those shown or provide a complete account of the circumstances in which it was recorded.
Mohammad Sarwar Hossain Mridha, chief of the Shibchar upazila Jamaat-e-Islami unit, said action would be taken against Taizul Islam in accordance with the organisation’s rules if the allegations were proven.
Separately, the incident has been linked to a complaint concerning alleged death threats. Mohammad Rakibul Hasan, the officer in charge of investigation at Shibchar Police Station, said madrasa teacher Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad had filed a general diary (GD) with the police over threats to his life.
A general diary is a formal record through which police are informed of an incident, complaint or apprehension. Its filing does not, on its own, establish the truth of the allegations recorded.
Rakibul Hasan added that the police had no further new information to share about the matter at the time of his statement.
The available information leaves several aspects of the incident unresolved, including the circumstances surrounding the recording and circulation of the video. The party has announced its decision regarding Taizul Islam, while its local chief has indicated that further action would depend on whether the allegations are established. The police have not reported any additional developments in the case.
