The United States government issued a security warning on Monday after intense gunfire erupted near its embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital. The violence comes amid a worsening surge in gang warfare engulfing the impoverished Caribbean nation.

Incident Overview

Residents in the Tabarre district, where the embassy is situated close to the international airport, reported prolonged exchanges of gunfire between police forces and rival gangs. The clashes disrupted the area, prompting heightened security measures.

Location Event Details
Port-au-Prince (Tabarre) Heavy gunfire between gangs and police Near US Embassy, close to the airport
Date Monday Ongoing security concern
US Embassy Response Restricted movement All official personnel suspended from leaving embassy compound

The US State Department confirmed that all official movements by government personnel outside the embassy grounds have been suspended until further notice.

Context: Haiti’s Ongoing Crisis

Haiti remains the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with large parts of its territory controlled by rival armed gangs. These groups are responsible for murders, kidnappings, rapes, and widespread terrorisation of local communities.

According to figures released last month by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), at least 3,141 people have been killed in the first half of 2025 alone as gang violence intensifies and further destabilises the nation.

Political Turmoil Adds to Instability

In addition to the security crisis, Haiti is grappling with deepening political turmoil. On Monday, police announced the arrest of a former senator accused of:

  • Conspiracy against the state
  • Financing criminal groups
  • Complicity in murder

This development underscores the fragile state of governance amid the country’s ongoing lawlessness.

Issue Description
Gang Violence Over 3,000 fatalities in six months (2025)
Political Arrests Former senator detained on serious criminal allegations
Impact on Civilians Heightened insecurity, disruptions to daily life

As the situation deteriorates, international agencies and governments remain concerned about the safety of their personnel and the humanitarian implications for Haiti’s vulnerable population.
