The body was found near Rajabari Ghat, in the Tongi area, at around 4.30pm. The recovery was confirmed on Thursday morning by Firoz Uddin, an inspector at the Tongi outpost of the Dhaka regional unit of the River Police.
According to Firoz Uddin, the River Police received information about the incident through the national emergency service, 999. A team subsequently went to the area and recovered Sauri’s body from the river.
Following the recovery, the police prepared an inquest report and sent the body to the mortuary of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College for a post-mortem examination.
The authorities have yet to establish the circumstances surrounding his death. Firoz Uddin said the cause could be confirmed once the post-mortem report becomes available. The examination is expected to help determine the cause of death, although further investigation may be required to clarify the events leading up to the incident.
Sauri, a retired flight lieutenant, lived with his family in a flat in Sector 18 of Uttara, in the northern part of Dhaka. He reportedly went missing on Tuesday, but the circumstances of his disappearance have not yet been made public.
His father has been identified as K M Enayet Helal.
The recovery has raised questions about how Sauri came to be in the river and what happened before his disappearance. However, no definitive explanation has been established so far, and the available information does not indicate whether his death resulted from an accident or another cause.
The River Police are awaiting the findings of the post-mortem examination before making a conclusive statement about the circumstances of his death. Further details may emerge as the investigation progresses.
For now, the recovery of the former Air Force officer’s body marks the end of the search for him, but the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.
