Derailment Near Mahera Disrupts Dhaka–North Bengal Rail Services

Rail services between Dhaka and northern Bangladesh were disrupted on Thursday after a carriage of the Nilsagar Express derailed near Mahera in Mirzapur, Tangail. The incident left two trains stranded at nearby stations and caused considerable inconvenience for passengers travelling along the route.

The derailment occurred at around 9.30am on 29 October. No injuries had been reported immediately after the incident.

The Nilsagar Express had departed from Dhaka at 6.45am, bound for Chilahati in northern Bangladesh. According to information available from railway officials, the train had travelled approximately five kilometres beyond Mirzapur railway station when the derailment occurred, around two kilometres east of Mahera railway station.

A loud noise accompanied the incident, alarming passengers on board. Ticket examiner Russel alerted the train driver after becoming aware of the problem. The driver subsequently brought the train to a halt near Mahera station.

The incident disrupted services on a key railway route connecting the capital with northern districts. Passengers on the affected train and those waiting at other stations faced uncertainty as services were interrupted.

Assistant Station Master at Mahera railway station, Rakibul Hasan, said the carriage identified as the ‘ঠ’ coach had derailed. He added that, subject to authorisation from the relevant railway authorities, the train would be allowed to continue its journey after the affected coaches were detached and left behind.

According to Hasan, two other trains were stranded at Tangail and Jamuna Bridge East stations because of the disruption. The resulting delay affected passengers who were relying on the railway network to reach their destinations.

Railway disruptions can have consequences beyond the train directly involved in an accident. When a train becomes immobilised on an operational route, other services may also be delayed while railway personnel assess the situation and arrange for the affected section to be cleared. Passengers may then face longer journeys and uncertainty over connecting travel arrangements.

The immediate priority following the derailment is to deal with the affected carriage and restore normal train movements. However, the precise cause of the incident had not been established in the initial reports. There was also no confirmed information about when services between Dhaka and northern Bangladesh would return to normal.

Although no casualties had been reported, the incident highlighted the disruption that a single derailment can cause to railway operations, particularly on routes used by long-distance passenger trains.

Further details about the recovery operation, the cause of the derailment and the resumption of regular services were not immediately available.
