Police Probe Death of Liberation War Veteran in Mymensingh

Police have recovered the body of a Liberation War veteran found hanging from a tree in Dobaura upazila of Mymensingh, with an investigation under way to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.

The deceased was identified as Sheikh Hossain Ali, also known as Hossain, a resident of Darsha Montoni village in the upazila. His body was recovered on Thursday morning from a tree inside a bamboo grove near his home, according to Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Dobaura Police Station.

Police said local residents discovered the body in the bamboo grove early in the morning and alerted the authorities. Officers subsequently went to the scene, recovered the body and arranged for it to be sent to the mortuary at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The examination is expected to help establish the cause of death. Investigators have yet to determine whether the veteran died by suicide or was killed, and police have said no definitive conclusion can be reached until the findings are available.

Officer-in-Charge Shafiqul Islam said preliminary inquiries had provided some information about the deceased’s family circumstances. According to the officer, the veteran’s family was financially comfortable, with no apparent financial hardship in the household.

However, initial investigations indicated that Hossain Ali had disagreements with his sons over various family matters. Police have not established whether those reported disagreements were connected to his death, and no further details about the nature of the disputes have been disclosed.

“The cause of death has not yet been established. It remains unclear whether he died by suicide or was the victim of a killing. The post-mortem examination will help clarify the matter,” the officer-in-charge said.

The discovery has raised questions among local residents about the circumstances in which the veteran was found near his home. However, the available information does not establish how the incident occurred or whether anyone else was involved.

A post-mortem examination is an important part of the investigation because it can provide medical evidence about the cause and circumstances of a death. Police will also need to assess the information gathered at the scene and other relevant evidence before determining what happened.

Authorities said legal proceedings were under way in connection with the incident. The investigation is continuing, and the post-mortem findings are expected to play a significant role in deciding the next steps.

For now, the death of Sheikh Hossain Ali remains unexplained. Police have urged caution in drawing conclusions before the investigation is complete, as both the possibility of suicide and the possibility of a criminal act remain unresolved.
